G. Romano is known for its clean contemporary lines and fashion-forward fabrics
MONTREAL - Upholstery specialist G. Romano is celebrating 50 years of design and manufacturing at the Canadian Home Furnishings Market in Toronto, which opened Saturday and runs through Tuesday, and at upcoming shows in Las Vegas and High Point.
The company was founded in 1962. After the death of founder Gino Romano in the early 1990s, it began transitioning from a mass market look to its current style of clean, contemporary upholstery.
"We took the core quality beliefs that Mr. Romano had installed when he first started this business - quality, originality and pride in craftsmanship - and put a new spin on them in a more fashion-forward, design driven direction," said Rick Lovegrove, vice president of sales and son-in-law of the company's founder.
"Over a relatively short period of time we changed everything about our business: new designs, new suppliers, new customers and a new production process within our own factory," he added.
Today, the second generation husband and wife team of Lovegrove and Natalina Romano, vice president of manufacturing, along with co-founder Maria Romano, and a core group of veteran employees are managing G. Romano.
The company says it builds all its products in its factory here using old-fashioned craftsmanship and eco friendly materials.
To celebrate the anniversary, the company will be featuring vintage photos and memorabilia in its showrooms in Toronto, Las Vegas and High Point, including photos of Gino Romano and the factory. Other programs will be rolled out all year, including a new product catalog and the company's first iPad app.
The company sells to upscale retailers across North America and internationally.
