BOSTON — Top 15 bedding producer Spring Air is introducing the first mattress line certified as "asthma and allergy friendly" by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.
Spring Air officials described the new Back Supporter Breathe line, set for this month's Las Vegas Market, as a breakthrough product that will appeal to the more than 70 million Americans with asthma or allergy conditions.
The certification, from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, a nonprofit patient organization dedicated to fighting asthma and allergic diseases, was earned after a year of product development and scientific testing at accredited third-party laboratories, officials said.
Spring Air joins brands like Disney, LG, Valspar and Dyson that are among the more than 130 consumer products to have earned the asthma and allergy friendly certification mark.
Said Spring Air President Rick Robinson: "We've never been more excited about a product introduction, especially one that addresses head-on the No. 1 product in every home - the mattress - which has been identified by asthma, allergy and immunology experts as the priority target for reducing allergens and improving indoor air quality. We say our name has been trusted by millions for 85 years, and we're proud to be the first mattress company to make such a product available."
The certification mark is awarded to products that have proven in laboratory testing to be "more suitable for people with asthma and allergies and that are effective in indoor environmental control and allergen reduction," AAFA said.
The Spring Air Breathe line, expected to retail from $999 to $2,499, includes six one-sided models of three designs each in two comfort options, firm and plush.
"Breathe products are unique and exclusive in their components and patent-pending designs, and scientifically proven to be effective in indoor environmental control and allergen reduction," Robinson said.
The innerspring beds feature three spring units exclusive to Spring Air. The top model uses the patent-pending, multi-level innerspring design featured in Spring Air's premium Sleep Sense Back Supporter beds.
All Breathe models are foam-encased and include components and materials enclosed in a patent-pending, zippered cover. The stretch knit cover is highly breathable and is styled in a pattern and color to suggest healthy air flow and circulation, officials said.
A textured border fabric in slate blue coordinates with the top panel and includes the "Breathe: Live Healthier" embroidered logo.
The Breathe mattresses will be introduced as adult beds, but the producer plans to expand the concept into the youth and hospitality categories this year.
"Our ultimate objective is to begin improving America's quality of life one home at a time," Robinson said. "And that applies not only to the 70 million-plus who suffer from asthma or allergies, but also to the remaining 250 million people who can benefit substantially from a healthier sleep environment."
The new Breathe line, backed with a range of in-store materials, promotional and training support programs and consumer publicity events, will be shown at the Las Vegas Market, Jan. 30-Feb. 3, in Spring Air's alternate showroom, World Market Center B-1125.
