Caffeine helps Americans cope with their tired feelings
Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 23, 2012
Had your morning cup of coffee yet? If not, this would be a great time to get it, because our topic this week is something near and dear to many Americans: Caffeine.
There is no doubt that we are a nation that runs on caffeine, as the crowds at Starbucks make all too clear. And we've got survey data that backs up those observations, courtesy of the National Sleep Foundation's 2011 Sleep in America Poll.
The NSF, a sleep education and advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., took a look at caffeinated drink consumption by four key age groups in its Sleep in America Poll.
"One way Americans seem to be coping with feeling tired is by consuming caffeine," the NSF wrote. It found that caffeine consumption "seems to be prevalent across all ages."
Surprisingly, the NSF poll findings don't establish a link between the amount of caffeine consumed and when it is consumed and getting a good night's sleep or getting more sleep. But they do show some high levels of caffeine consumption; 23% of Baby Boomers, for example, are drinking four to six caffeinated beverages per day. Wonder how well they are sleeping? A number of sleep experts tell us that consumers should definitely cut back on caffeine consumption, especially from mid-afternoon on, to promote a good night of sleep.
