Furniture Today Bedding Forecast predicts single-digit gains for 2012
David Perry -- Furniture Today, February 1, 2012
LAS VEGAS - Furniture/Today's 2012 Consensus Bedding Forecast, released at a Las Vegas Market seminar here Tuesday, calls for bedding unit gains this year of 1.9% and dollar growth of 5.3%.
Following the presentation of the forecast, a panel of bedding producers and retailers offered their thoughts on where the industry is headed this year.
The newspaper prepares the forecast each year with input from dozens of bedding producers, who share their confidential unit and dollar projections. Furniture/Today then weights the forecasts based on the size of the producers and averages the figures to arrive at its Consensus Bedding Forecast.
The Furniture/Today forecast is more optimistic than the latest forecast issued by the International Sleep Products Assn.
ISPA's Forecast Panel envisions 1% unit growth this year and 4% growth in the dollar value of bedding shipments. The ISPA forecast was issued last fall.
Furniture/Today prepares its consensus bedding forecasts to give the industry another projection of how the industry might perform in the new year.
More than two dozen leading bedding producers, including virtually every major player, offered their unit and dollar predictions to the newspaper for the 2012 forecast.
If history is any indicator, the F/T bedding forecast for this year appears to be right on target.
A look back at bedding's unit and dollar performance in the last seven presidential election years, from 1984 on, reveals average unit growth of 1.8% and average dollar growth of 5.1% in those election years.
If the industry's declines in the recession year of 2008 are excluded from that list, the performance is even stronger, with an average unit gain of 3.9% and an average dollar gain of 7.5% in the six presidential years considered.
