Southfield, Mich., Nov. 13, 2017 – Gorman’s Home Furnishings & Interior Design Chairman Bernard (Bernie) Moray was recently inducted into the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Greensboro, North Carolina.

One of four honorees that evening, Moray was selected by a seven-member committee based on his contribution to the growth and development of the home furnishings industry. Specifically, he was evaluated on enduring excellence, superior accomplishments, innovation and creativity, as well as philanthropic generosity.

A native Detroiter, Moray began his career in the furniture industry in 1949 with Robinson’s Furniture. The Air Force Reserves veteran later left to purchase Gorman’s Furniture from Ben Gorman in 1965. The following year, he opened the company’s landmark Contemporary Gallery in Southfield, Mich., with the goal of becoming the best contemporary furniture retailer in the nation. Additional stores in Michigan – Troy, Novi, Lakeside and Grand Rapids, as well as a dedicated warehouse in Farmington Hills – opened throughout the following decades. He continues today as Chairman with partners Jeff Roberts, John Moray and Tom Lias as CEO.

A modernist with a love for contemporary furniture, he recognized the potential of high-end contemporary design before it became mainstream. His insistence on quality and ensuring that the company followed his “make it right” mantra made it an industry leader in the country.

“I have been incredibly lucky to work with Bernie since 1983. His sense of style, innovation and business acumen truly are unmatched,” said Lias. “He has served as a mentor to so many in the home furnishings industry. This is a very well-deserved honor.”

During his tenure at Gorman’s, the industry veteran has championed the company’s growth, as well as civic and philanthropic endeavors in the stores that have raised considerable financial support for organizations such as Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Toys for Tots, Arc of Oakland County and Kent County and the American Cancer Society.

Recognized as a titan of the industry, the former president of the National Home Furnishings Association (NHFA) was recognized in 1993 by the organization as Retailer of the Year and, in 2013, with the Masters of the Game: Furniture Today Lifetime Achievement Award.

Moray is a Franklin, Mich. resident. He has served as an executive committee member of the Interior Design Society, chairman of the Allied Jewish Campaign’s furniture division and on the Visitors Board of the Wayne State University Business School.
