City of Hope plans Spirit of Life Award banquet, West Coast tournament

Golf and tennis tourney in June to honor Levitz family

Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 8, 2012

HIGH POINT — Plans are set to honor industry leaders Jeff Seaman and Bob Sherman with the City of Hope's Spirit of Life Award in April, and to salute members of the Levitz family at the organization's 21st Annual West Coast Golf & Tennis Tournament in June.

As announced earlier, Seaman, the CEO of Top 100 store Rooms To Go, and Sherman, CEO of Serta Mattress, will receive their awards at a dinner during the spring High Point Market. The event will take place at 6 p.m. April 22 at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.

City of Hope, a research, treatment and education center focusing on cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases, presents the Spirit of Life Award annually to recognize outstanding business leadership and philanthropic achievements.

"We are delighted to have two illustrious leaders being honored by City of Hope with the Spirit of Life Award," said Jena Hall, co-chairman of the National Home Furnishings Industry initiative at City of Hope. "Together, with my national co-chairman, Roger Friesen of Casana Furniture, and our newly appointed Spirit of Life dinner chairman, Kevin O'Conner of Samson Marketing, we will celebrate the advancement and promise of City of Hope's critical research and treatments and the extraordinary contributions of these two industry leaders, Jeff Seaman and Bob Sherman, at our annual Spirit of Life gala."

On June 4, the West Coast Golf & Tennis Tournament in Coto de Caza, Calif., will celebrate seven members of the Levitz family, which has been active in the U.S. furniture industry for more than a century - Sam Levitz, Leon Levitz, Mike Levitz, Shelley Levitz, Danny Selznick, Phillip Levitz and Alan Levitz.

Ever since R.B. Levitz opened his first furniture store in Lebanon, Pa., in 1910, the family has been a part of the industry. Members of the family built the former nationwide retailer Levitz Furniture and still operate stores including Sam Levitz Furniture in Tucson, Ariz., Ashley HomeStores of Dallas, and RoomStores of Phoenix.

Registration for the event will open at 8 a.m., with golf starting at 10 a.m. and tennis at noon. There will be a reception and silent auction at 3:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 5 p.m.

For information on attendance and sponsorship at either the April or June events, contact City of Hope's Yolanda Guerrero at (213) 241-7168 or yguerrero@coh.org.
