Poker tournament raises $17,000, so far, for Autism Speaks

David Perry -- Furniture Today, February 9, 2012

LAS VEGAS — Autism research was the winner when home furnishings executives gathered at a famous poker venue here to support the Autism Speaks organization.

The poker tournament at Binion's and related activities have already brought in more than $17,000 for autism, and the total is expected to grow, organizers said.

Symbol Vice President Mike McQuiston was the grand prize winner. He donated his winnings to Autism Speaks, as did runner up Chad Coconis of Coconis Furniture in Zanesville, Ohio, and other top finishers.

"We had a great group of players and we were very excited to have professional poker player Karina Jett join us," said co-host Doug Krinsky of Restonic.

He said the combined donations, entry fees, corporate sponsorships, and online and silent auction support brought in more than $17,000 so far, with results of an online auction benefiting Ante4autism.com still to be tallied.

Krinsky had special thanks for the event's sponsors. APJL Consulting was a $2,500 sponsor, while Gold $1,000 sponsors included Leggett & Platt, Symbol Mattress, Roger Magowitz, Karl & Cathi Glassman and Restonic. Silver $500 sponsors included Serta and Wright of Thomasville, while Bronze $250 sponsors included Peggy Christmas, Mantua Mfg., Ashley Furniture Ohio sales representatives Jake Monnier and Myra Stone, and Todd Miller.

Online auction items included a Restonic gel visco queen size set, a Simmons Beautyrest queen size set, an Eclipse Essential Sleep gel queen or king size set, a foursome of golf at Ohio State's Scarlet golf course, a Sealy Posturepedic queen size set, a Serta iComfort queen set, a leather sofa, an Ashley recliner and a Tempur-Pedic Cloud Supreme flat queen set. One hundred percent of proceeds from the online auction will be donated to Autism Speaks.

"Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed now in one in 110 children in the United States, and one in 70 boys," said Krinsky.

Other co-hosts included Allen Parvizian, APJL Consulting; Mark Quinn, Leggett and Platt; Richie Gallaher, Tempur-Pedic; Randy Coconis, Coconis Furniture; Stuart Carlitz, Eclipse International; Phil Miner, Symbol Mattress; Mike McQuiston, Symbol Mattress; Scott Graham, PMD Furniture Direct; Jerry Williams, PMD Furniture Direct; Anthony Mehran, Huffman Koos Furniture; and Joseph Amato, Mattress Matters.

2011 Champion Jim Ralph presented the winner's plaque to McQuiston.
