Nebraska Furniture Mart rejects bid to move HQ from Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. — Despite overtures from Texas, Nebraska Furniture Mart plans to enlarge its headquarters here and not move to the Dallas area, Omaha.com reported today.

The website, part of the Omaha World-Herald newspaper, said Texas officials offered the mart "huge incentives" for the retailer to move its home offices to the Dallas metropolitan area, where the company is building its largest retail store with 1.2 million square feet of warehouse space, a 546,000-square-foot showroom and a 25,000-square-foot regional office. The new store is scheduled to open in 2015.

To support its growing operations and the new Dallas store, which will be slightly larger than its home complex in Omaha, the company has purchased a vacant two-story, 44,000-square-foot office building here and plans to spend $7.4 million for renovation.

When the building opens, Omaha.com said the Mart will hire at least 176 employees, including executives and managers, buyers, information technology staff and customer services representatives.
