The retailer, part of the Top 100 Berkshire Hathaway furniture division, ran a Sale of the Century event in April, promising that every 100th purchase would be free at its stores in Houston, San Antonio and Bryan/College Station, Texas.
Bill Kimbrell, CEO of the 12-store Star, confirmed a Houston Chronicle blog report about one Richmond, Texas, consumer, who received her $40,000 purchase for free. He noted that consumers could sign up to win a gift certificate, too, with no purchase necessary.
"We had decent business," Kimbrell said. "It created some excitement."
He added that Star is planning additional anniversary promotions through the remainder of this year with community events and contests for employees.
"We're trying to touch all those special folks," he said, "give something back as well as make customers happy with some exciting offers."
