The sun rises over Mount Bromo, an ancient volcano in an Indonesian national park.
SURABAYA, Indonesia - If you can take a break from work, Indonesia has plenty of sights to see, ranging from temples such as Borobudur, the ninth century Mahayana Buddhist monument in Central Java, to Mount Bromo, which is part of a national park a few hours drive time south of Surabaya.
During a trip to Indonesia in August, Furniture/Today Associate Editor Tom Russell and industry sourcing expert and consultant J. Jewett took a side trip to Mount Bromo, an ancient volcano. The two left the Shangri-La Hotel in Surabaya at midnight and arrived at the national park about 3:30 a.m.
From there, dozens of Jeeps took tourist s up to a viewing area from which they watched the sun rise. This also provided a spectacular early morning view of the volcanic range, which includes the dormant cone of Mount Betok. From there, visitors took the Jeeps back down the mountain to a volcanic sand floor, where they rode horses to the other side of the mountain.
