Function, lighter finishes sell in occasional

LAS VEGAS - Occasional vendors experienced strong sales in a variety of products this market, ranging from functional lift-top cocktail tables to accent tables with lighter weathered finishes that highlight wood grain patterns.
Entertainment consoles with innovative features geared to today's technologies also drove traffic and sales at resources such as Sunny Designs and Twin-Star International.
Twin-Star drew dealer interest in its new 72-inch-wide Classic Flame TV console, available in white and black lacquer finishes. In addition to built-in fireplaces, the $999 units feature an integrated sound bar with a removable speaker grille and built-in wireless technology for Apple mobile devices that can operate via remote control. The units also wirelessly stream audio and have built-in speakers and audio video hookups.
The company also had strong response to two new modular entertainment walls, which can hold fireplace units and also have piers with a built-in refrigerator unit and wine storage.
Sunny Designs offered additions to its transitional Monterrey collection in birch solids, available in a merlot finish. The products range from a new 81.5-inch-tall display cabinet with sliding doors that that retails at $1,399, to several new TV consoles including a 52-inch version retailing at $599 that has drawer and shelf storage for a DVD player. The same unit is also available in 48-, 64- and 78-inch sizes.
Four Hands did well with occasional introductions including additions to its Bina collection, made with reclaimed peroba wood from Brazil. The highlights included a media console with lighter versions of the wood on the frame and darker versions on the doors, for a two-tone effect. Another signature piece at market was a 74-inch-tall spinning bookcase.
Dealers liked the reclaimed wood story of the peroba, which comes from old buildings such as schools and homes, said Cameron Cook, company public relations manager.
"These are being torn down as the country grows and it's an unlimited resource for us," she said.
Coast to Coast Accents had an aggressive launch with 75 new pieces. Among the most popular were several clean lined accent and occasional tables in lighter, natural wood tone finishes.
The company continues to make these and other new pieces available immediately to dealers shopping market by stocking them in its domestic warehouse in Memphis, Tenn.
"Customers love the product and they love the fact they can get it and sell it so quickly," said Andy Stein, CEO.
Sister companies Broyhill and Lane continued to attract interest in mostly inline groups, many of which include functional lift-top cocktails and mixed media designs that incorporate glass, metal and slate for a variety of contemporary and transitional looks.
"Occasional is all about combining function with fashion," said Bruce Frenzel, vice president of merchandising and strategic accounts at Broyhill. "At Broyhill and Lane in Vegas, we showed many pieces with mixed media and materials."
He added that scaling also was an important factor in the success of the category at market as many groups were shown in living room settings.
"Because - at Broyhill and Lane - we make both the occasional pieces and the upholstery, we have the advantage of assuring the scaling is perfect," he said.
