Rocker Billy Corgan, wrestlers star in Walter E. Smithe Furniture ad

Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 21, 2013

CHICAGO — A Walter E. Smithe Furniture commercial featuring Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan and his wrestling company is raising money for charity while enjoying a good deal of media attention.

According to a Chicago Tribune report, Corgan said he wouldn't have done the commercial for anyone else, noting a mutual admiration for 1970s era wrestling and a chance to promote his Resistance Pro wrestling company while raising money for the PAWS Chicago pet charity.

The humorous spot features the three Smithe brothers playing musical chairs with Corgan. After losing his chair to the Smithes, the musician, poet and wrestling promoter calls in his wrestlers to trade blows with the brothers Walter, Tim and Mark. It's all called to a halt when one of the wrestlers prepares to break a chair over the head of one of the Smithes.

"Wait. That's a Walter E. Smithe chair," Corgan says in the commercial's only spoken lines.

The Itasca, Ill.-based Top 100 company donated $50,000 to PAWS in return for Corgan's participation, the Tribune said.
