Vermont bill aims to ban furniture containing FR chemical

MONTPELIER, Vt. — Vermont lawmakers are considering a bill that could ban the sale of furniture containing the flame retardant chemical chlorinated tris, or TDCPP.
The legislation, S.81, also would extend a 2009 ban on Deca class flame retardants in furniture and electronics to cover plastic shipping pallets, according to a press release from Vermont Public Interest Research Group.
VPIRG said the Deca items in the bill are similar to legislation enacted in Maine, Maryland and Oregon.
TDCPP, a flame retardant used in foam, was added in 2011 to California's Proposition 65 list of chemicals that may cause cancer, birth defects or reproductive harm.
