Rooms To Go switches to LED lighting in stores, cuts energy costs

Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 1, 2013

SEFFNER, Fla. — Rooms To Go said it has completed an effort it began in 2010 to switch to LED lighting, a move that has resulted in average energy savings of 35% to 45% per store.

The retailer said it expects a payback of its project investment in less than 12 months.

The Seffner, Fla.-based Top 100 company said it switched 115 stores to 16-18-watt LED track lamps from the 60-watt halogen lamps previously used. It also selected a wider optical beam spread for the new lamps, using a 25 degree angle instead of the 12 degree angle of the halogen lamps, allowing stores to decrease the number of lamps by as much as 10%.

And since the LED lamps produce less heat, a decrease in air conditioning demand also has contributed to increased energy efficiency.

The retailer engaged Real Win Win, an energy management company, to help it take advantage of utility rate rebate incentive programs to cover the cost of the switch at more than 45 stores.

"Rooms To Go is proud to set a positive example for companies striving to be energy efficient and operationally effective," said company CEO Jeff Seaman.
