NEWTON, N.C. — Alan Carroll Bohler, who worked at Bassett Furniture for 34 years and retired as vice president of sales for the company's upholstery division in 1998, has died at age 80.

Bohler was a Georgia native who grew up in High Point, where he started his career in the furniture business with photography firm Alderman Studios. He left Alderman to join Bassett, where he became a mentor to many in the furniture industry.

He also was an avid golfer and was involved in the leadership of Catawba Country Club. Friends recalled his optimism and graciousness.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, a sister, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home, 56 NW Blvd. in Newton, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 19. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, 300 N. Main Ave. in Newton.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First United Methodist Church of Newton, 300 N. Main Ave., Newton, N.C. 28658 or to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton, N.C. 28658.
