Nicoletti Calia unveils upper-end Italian line

HIGH POINT - Nicoletti Calia, which has been marketing Italian-designed, Chinese made leather upholstery in the U.S. since 2009, is launching an upper-end, Italian made upholstery line at this month's High Point Market.
Called Giuseppe & Giuseppe, the new line features 15 sofa frames with leather and leather/fabric covers. It will be produced at the company's 300,000-square-foot factory in Italy, and the leather will be sourced entirely from Italy, said Eustachio Nicoletti, general manager of Nicoletti Calia.
"We believe Made in Italy is making a comeback in the States," Nicoletti said. "It will have a more sophisticated design and craftsmanship that is the hallmark of a Made in Italy product."
He said sofas have a starting retail price point of about $2,999, while sectionals start at about $3,999.
While those price points are well above the Nicoletti Calia line, which features sofas from $999 to $1,999, he believes the new line will be very competitive with other Italian-made upholstery in the marketplace.
"Many companies are trying to go down in price, but we are doing the opposite," Nicoletti said. "We are targeting more upscale consumers."
He said the company initially is trying to place the new line with existing dealers in major metropolitan areas, where European contemporary styles are more popular. However, the company won't limit itself to those areas, he stressed.
"More people are interested in contemporary," said Nicoletti. "With this line, we are making it more affordable for them."
About half of the new frames will be stocked at a warehouse near New York City, and other models can be added as demand increases, he said.
The name for the new line was derived from the first names of two legendary Italian leather upholstery designers, Giuseppe Nicoletti and Giuseppe Calia.
Giuseppe Nicoletti, Eustachio Nicoletti's father, founded Nicoletti SpA in the 1980s, while Giuseppe Calia is the founder of CaliaItalia.
The two Italian companies formed a joint venture in 2009 to produce leather upholstery for the U.S. market.
At market, the Giuseppe & Giuseppe line will be shown in the Nicoletti Calia showroom, space D-824 of the International Home Furnishings Center. It will occupy space that had been sublet to Magniflex, an Italian mattress producer.
