Bedding Outlook -- Second-tier, specialty producers see host of challenges on horizon

Difficult year expected in '07

HIGH POINT -- Like their larger counterparts, leaders of second-tier and specialty bedding producers generally see a challenging year on the horizon. Dollars are going up, they predict, but unit growth won't keep pace.

Order this exclusive bedding report from Furniture Today.
They often cite a lackluster real estate market as positioning the industry for tough sledding in 2007. On the positive side, they believe the specialty sleep bandwagon will continue to pick up steam, giving a boost to the already long parade of producers in that arena.

An area of particular concern is the introduction of new fire-resistant beds in the new year, a change that will move retail price points up a notch or two. Some producers say those higher prices will be a negative, probably affecting unit sales, while boosting dollar volumes. But others see the onset of the new national FR regulations, which take effect on July 1, as offering an opportunity for the industry to unleash a wave of new promotions.

Here's what the bedding producers see for 2007:

* Dave Roberts, president of Comfort Solutions: "It will be a continuation of 2006. Retail will be challenging. A slow housing market and high consumer debt levels will keep consumers out of the market. It will be challenging to keep the factories full. It will also be challenging to maximize sales opportunities while limiting margin erosion."

* Gerry Borreggine, president of Therapedic: "This will be a difficult year. Housing starts have slowed, and the real estate market has flattened. Both are indicators of slowed home furnishings sales."
