Nicoletti shuts down China plant
Will focus on higher-end Italian goods

HIGH POINT — Leather upholstery major Nicoletti has halted production at its two-year-old factory in China due to the continuing industry sales slump, the company confirmed Tuesday.
Jim Anton, vice president of U.S. sales, said the Italian company will continue to produce upper-end goods in Italy but has stopped accepting orders for its factory in Shanghai, where its promotionally priced goods have been made.
“The upper end has suffered, but nothing like the promotional business,” Anton said. “The higher-end customer hasn’t been as affected by the economic downturn.”
He said Nicoletti sofas made in Italy generally retail for $1,999 and up, while sofas from the Chinese plant retail for about $999.
The promotionally priced goods are sold under the Sofa Art by Giuseppe Nicoletti brand name. Upper-end merchandise is sold under the Nicoletti and Suite Evolution names.
