American of Martinsville cutting 400 jobs
Contract producer shifting wood production offshore

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Contract furniture manufacturer American of Martinsville will eliminate 400 jobs here as it shifts its wood furniture production offshore, according to a report in the Martinsville Bulletin.
The company, which La-Z-Boy sold to Hancock Park Associates in 2006, will still make upholstered furniture at the plant. The cuts will affect more than half of the company’s 703 full-time employees.
“Ultimately, we have been forced to conclude that if we are going to meet customer expectations and remain competitive in the marketplace, we must shift the bulk of our case goods production overseas,” President Noel Chitwood said in a press release.
