Welcome to Furniture/Today's latest blog--Green Light.  Each week, I'll take a look at interesting news and updates about specific sustainability proposals in the home furnishings sector, while identifying broader eco-friendly global trends and initiatives.

The most important part of this whole process will be your input.  So, take a look at my posts below and weigh in with what you think by clicking on "Add Your Comment" at the bottom of each blog.

Somebody needs to tell Kermit the frog that it’s all over: It really is easy to be green.

Even better, thanks to that marvelous and often addicting box we call the TV, being green is getting easier and easier with each passing day.

Here’s why. The networks are seeing the opportunity to make the green by focusing in on green programming.

They, like some of us in home furnishings, recognize that consumers are tuning in to eco friendly initiatives, so what could be more logical than green TV?

Recently, Discovery announced that it is investing in excess of $50 million to broadcast original green programming, largely through the upcoming new network called Planet Green.

Here is how the new network describes itself and its mission:

With the market just around the corner and spring in the air, it’s no wonder my thoughts are focused on green. The good news for those of us supporting green initiatives is that there will be plenty to see in the way of new initiatives at market.

One good example is The Old Wood Co., which makes a debut at market with a line of occasional and dining tables made from reclaimed wood that will shown in the Lee Industries Showroom at 100 South Lindsay Street during the April High Point Market.

Founded by Darren Green, a former Florida-based furniture rep, the sources reclaimed wood from old, irreparable structures throughout the eastern United States. Specifically, the ...Read More

Much of what you read here has to do with news about the burgeoning green market. And that’s good, because there is a lot going on.

However, as part of our mission to bring you both sides of the story, I want to share some information that sheds light on why some consumers say they don’t buy green products more frequently.

According to a recent study by Mintel International, the two biggest obstacles are higher costs, the reason sited by 66% of consumers polled and availability, the answer given by some 49% of consumers.

So, if you want to see some green from your green offerings, make it a point to price your goods on par with non-green goods. It also makes sense (and dollars) to also make sure your customers don’t have to drive all over God’s green acres to find your green items.

Worth noting is ...Read More
