Earth Day brings bedding winners - and losers

Happy Earth Day!

If you don’t know what this day celebrates, it’s back to fifth grade for you. And speaking of remedial work, I wonder if some of that is needed for some of my colleagues in the mattress industry.

Only a couple of bedding companies are taking advantage of the public relations opportunities afforded by Earth Day, based on an unscientific sampling of press releases I’ve seen in the last few weeks.

Natural bedding producer Natura (appropriate name) is giving away an organic mattress through Facebook to celebrate Earth Day, which is April 22. The company invited customers to post pictures of their old mattress on Natura’s Facebook page. The winner will be randomly selected on Earth Day. That’s a clever idea.

And I just received an extensive press release from Simmons in which that producer touts its green bedding offerings designed with environmental guru Danny Seo. Simmons is all over the Earth Day angle. Good for them.

I’m sure other bedding companies have Earth Day promotions (at least I hope they do), but the Natura and Simmons examples are the only ones that quickly come to mind. So we send earthy congratulations to those two producers, and to everyone else we say: Too bad the earth stood still for you on Earth Day.
