Vegas deserves more than two days

February 8, 2010

So now it’s back to the office after a busy week in Las Vegas. And it’s time for a brief rant aimed at those bedding players who blew into and out of Vegas last week.

Given the dozens and dozens of mattress producers and sleep accessories suppliers who show in Las Vegas, why are some retailers giving the Las Vegas Market only two days of their time? That just doesn’t make any sense.

Yes, I know that companies are still watching their nickels closely. But it doesn’t really cost much more to spend another day in Las Vegas. The payoff could be considerable. New bedding products, new bedding display ideas and new bedding selling concepts are everywhere. There is certainly far more to be seen than can be captured in just two days.

And it’s not just some of the retailers who were in a hurry to leave. Some producers also bolted early. Shame on them.

Las Vegas offers a rich panorama of bedding products. Serious students of the mattress business can get quite a bit accomplished there. But it does require a time commitment, and that commitment should be for more than two days.

"Dear Retailer: Limited number of vendors? You can't be talking about the mattress category. Whatever categories you are shopping in Vegas, there is more to that market (and any market, for that matter) than just product. The seminars and networking opportunities also play a key role at every market." - Have you run a multi-store retail chain? First of all the cost of changing vendors is HUGE!!! Secondly, it is only cost effective to buy from factories in your area, hence, limiting your selection.

I didn't make it out this time because of the weather. I usually do two days. I can see everyone I need to see on day one usually. Then I shop for new stuff on day two. In the winter I see Kingsdown a day early. It is easier to do it this way. No one wastes your time if they know you have to be somewhere else in an hour.

High Point is so much more fun to work. The labyrinth of hallways, the restaurants, the shows, not to mention the girls. Who needs Vegas?

I got done with Vegas in a day and 1/2. Really.... that is MORE than anyone needs because of the limited number of vendors. Infact, I may fly in and out on the same day next time.
