Consumer mattress buying guide debuts

August 5, 2010

It's been more than two years in the making, and it debuts this week. Welcome to Mattress Buying 101.

For the first time, we are talking directly to consumers with this consumer buying guide. A print version is in the Las Vegas Opening Day issue, along with plenty of other bedding stories that mark another bedding-rich market in Las Vegas.

The buying guide takes our bedding coverage to another place - to the living rooms, dens - and bedrooms - of consumers around the country. In it, we provide an overview of key issues in the mattress shopping and mattress buying experience.

At Furniture/Today, we began talking about communicating directly with consumers more than two years ago. We believe we have a unique perspective on consumer issues, as we are in touch with the retailers who serve consumers, and with the producers who serve the retailers. In addition, we regularly conduct consumer research, and we understand the critical role the consumer plays in the mattress buying equation.

We are making the information in the consumer buying guide available in several formats. The print version in our Aug. 2 is just one. Click here to read an online version of the buying guide as well as see me discuss these issues in a video.

This is an exciting new chapter for us at Furniture/Today. We welcome your comments, and we look forward to continuing to provide key mattress information to all of those groups, including consumers, suppliers, producers and retailers, who appreciate the importance of a good night's sleep.

Having one, the answer is yes it can. That being the only dnwisode. Comfort wise I would have a hard time using anything else. I only use a sheet for cover even in winter. My wife uses a down comforter even in summer so your results may vary. I have never had restless nights or back problems since we bought it. One of my teens wanted one for a birthday, then left for school and it was quickly claimed by another. I have had to buy two more knock offs for my kiddies as they fought over and would actually change mattresses out when the other sibling was gone.

I found an awesome webpage, with affordable mattress for sale, and bargain sofas. The service is 100% satisfaction guaranteed. No sales pitch, just quality and bargain mattresses www.inlifefurniturebrokers.com

Let's be reasonable. David's integrity as a journalist has been firmly established over many years. As for the links, I doubt he personally handles the technicals on this site.

How about the only link to "help you determine which mattress is right for you" is to Serta. It's the only link to a manufacturer in the whole piece. Whoever edited that buying guide should have checked those links beforehand. Even the most cursory of reviews of the material, as presented, would have revealed to the editor the visual bias towards Serta. A simple Serta logo on the cover should have been sufficient. It's like speaking to a Journalism 101 class.

The Thinker commented:

First of all, give me a break with the attitude. So the links didn't work, are you guys perfect. Second, I understand what people are saying as it relates to a branded consumer buying guide and how that might be a conflict but do me a favor....point out specifically where in that guide you think Dave Perry was partial to Serta as it relates to him suggesting that brand over another? Don't you think that consumers are smart enough these days to understand paid placement? It is like speaking to a group of college freshmen in marketing 101.

Over the years, hasn't Dave done enough GOOD things for the mattress industry to mitigate a few mistakes or technological oversights every now and then? Give it a rest and give him a break.

A true "brand neutral" consumer buying guide -- no brand sponsors of any kind and nothing being sold to consumers except knowledge can be found at Mattress Buying Madness.com

This is ridiculous. What kind of thought process went into Serta being involved? David, do you get paid for this kind of flawed judgement?

Was it hard to write "This buying guide is brand neutral" when Serta's name is on every page and the mattress selector link on page 4 goes right to their website? Perhaps the Warm Glass of Milk advisory board would have been a neutral sponsor.

Dave Perry commented:

Readers: I asked for your comments on our new consumer mattress buying guide, and I appreciate them. We did have a couple of glitches with some of the links, which have now been fixed. On the issue of Serta’s role in the buying guide, the answer is simple: Serta is the sponsor. But Serta did not write the buying guide – I did. Furniture/Today has published a number of bedding supplements over the years, and those supplements have had various sponsors. But in each case, I wrote the stories. The situation is the same here: These are my suggestions on how consumers can improve their mattress shopping experience. And I stand by them.

Someone who is supposed to be up to date on the mattress industry isn't. The links in question aren't dead links, they are completely unrelated to the topic in the buying guide. Shame on David for poor research. How much did Serta pay for "sponsoring" this guide? The true link should be www.whatsthebest-mattress.com. The Best-Buy-Guide.com is geared toward getting your email address for marketing purposes. As for the video on page 2, can you say upscale Wayne's World?

Chris, Look on pages 8-9 in the online buying guide. I am amazed at your inability to see the problem. Copy and paste the the web addresses I've given you below and what do you get. I'll tell you; one of the links in to a web site domain that is for sale (nothing to do with mattresses), the other one leads you to a page of MORE links (paid advertising links). Hello, hello, is anybody out there.

I'm not sure why my comments from yesterday were deleted but here they are again. I was a bit concerned when flipping through the online buying guide to find 2 of the links on page 4 to be dead links. Web pages that no longer exist. Kind of hurts the image of the guide.

Non-Serta commented:

It also hurts when one of the big "S" is labled in the corner the entire time and they give you a link to there "proper Bed" link. Mr. Perry, you may not be able to list the perfect bed but you guys have done a great job pointing out who makes it.
