Another worthy cause: Fighting pancreatic cancer
Introducing the Seventh Cause That Matters: The Seena Magowitz Foundation.
Honoring Seena Magowitz, who succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 2001, the foundation has raised millions of dollars for pancreatic cancer research. It has galvanized and unified the mattress industry, which comes together every December in Phoenix to share two days of fellowship and golf for the cause of fighting pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest types of cancer.
Pancreatic cancer doesn't get the attention of other types of cancers, and that's part of the problem. More attention would bring in more dollars to fund research. Leading pancreatic cancer researchers are confident they can beat this deadly disease. But they are handicapped by lack of funding.
I share those facts with you in the wake of the High Point Market's decision to highlight "Six Causes That Matter" at the next market. The six causes that will be honored are City of Hope, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, National Furniture Bank and Open Door Ministries. Those are all worthy causes.
But I must point out that there are more than Six Causes That Matter in the home furnishings industry. The Seena Magowitz Foundation, headed by bedding veteran Roger Magowitz, is a cause that does matter. It is a cause that involves matters of life and death; more than 30,000 people die of pancreatic cancer each year. It is a cause that the mattress industry has embraced.
And it is a cause that we hope the High Point Market will, at some point, embrace as well.

Steve Jobs' death since David posted this item underscores the need for pancreatic cancer research. It's commendable that the home furnishings industry supports this cause. Thanks for bringing it to wider attention, David.

what about the other five million charities since when does omitting one cause need such corny headline grabbing begging.....

Thanks for bringing the "Seventh Cause that matters" to the forefront. I thought the article was very informative and in no way placed a negative spin on the efforts of the High Point Market. The mattress industry indeed has embraced the efforts of the Seena Magowitz Foundaton and whenever possible we all need to support their efforts with press and funding.
Joseph commented:
Seems a little hyperbolic, no? So, the High Point Market does a good thing by promoting 6 causes that matter, but you've chosen to put a negative spin on it. It's the "6 causes the matter," not "the only 6 causes that matter." But, whatever it takes to pen an article, I guess.
