Congrats to all on premarket
Hats off to Samson Marketing’s Kevin O’Connor. As many of you know, he was the cornerstone for the recent High Point premarket. A lot of people referred to the Aug. 20-21 event as a “revitalized premarket.” But it really wasn’t as much revitalized as it was totally recreated.
For example, in the old days, buyers came to town primarily to see drawings and sketches of soon-to-be-introduced furniture.
This time around, the proposition was much more concrete. The 16 companies that put this event together promised buyers, and each other, that market-ready furniture, not drawings, would be on display.
However, exhibitors’ ability to do that was just one of the key ingredients in the event’s recipe for success.
When Kevin first mentioned his ideas about premarket to me, I felt it would be a success because much of what he was suggesting came directly from customers, in this case retailers.
The other neat thing to watch this premarket was a group of competitors working together for a common good. From what I’ve been told, these folks all worked the phones, personally inviting retailers to the event.
I was also impressed by the fact that all the exhibitors agreed that once the retailers came to town, they were free to visit any and all participating exhibitors.
Looking back, I think the promise of finished goods, goodwill and a spirit of cooperation were the keys to making this premarket a groundbreaking event.
By contrast, I remember a comment made by a manufacturer some years ago when the industry was trying to raise funds to kick off a campaign designed to raise consumer awareness of furniture.
When I asked the manufacturer in question how he felt about this cooperative effort, he said, “I am not going to participate in something that could help my competitor.”
Thankfully, times seem to be changing.
