Stepping up by stepping out?

June 22, 2005

At the recent FBI analyst and investor meeting, Mickey Holliman stated that our industry is not accustomed to having had on board an abundance of brainpower.

Based on the two most recent executive hires, Mickey and FBI seem to prefer new eyes from outside the industry.

Is he overlooking good, seasoned talent from within our own ranks, or is he on target by looking outside the box?   He also mentioned he is looking for a chief marketing officer.

Based on FBI's recent moves, do you think the person that lands the job will be someone from within the industry?  Let me hear from you!  (to add public comments click on "Add your Comment" below, or to email Ray directly click here.)

you are right on the money. in fact, a while back, we did a series called new eyes..it was all about people who had recently come to the furniture industry from outside the business. the perceptions, observations and insights from these folks was refreshing!

To be a good leader in this industry shouldn't be based soley on a furniture background. The paradigm change in our product sourcing requires extensive knowledge in marketing and global trade policies, which could appeal to a number of different executives with diverse backgrounds.
