A Sales Rep’s Happy Thanksgiving with Happy Birthday Thrown In
This Thursday is a truly American holiday. Its purpose was to give thanks for those great blessings our country has been given. In 1863 during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens".
According to Wikipedia "The event that some Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in 1621. The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days, and was attended by 53 Pilgrims and 90 Native Americans. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings"-days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought."
My have times changed. Now we gather for food, football and festivities. Of course, retailers kick into overdrive giving people permission to come out and buy their wares for the upcoming Christmas gifts. Our furniture industry gets some benefit from the fact that many people will be entertaining over the holidays and will want to spruce up the place with new furniture or accessory items.
As you take time this weekend to gather with family and friends, remember the reason for the season. Give thanks for our great blessings as a nation and as individuals who were fortunate enough to be born into a country that has a reason to celebrate Thanksgiving as opposed to other less fortunate people in the world.
On a personal note, I have one other reason to be thankful this year on Thursday. For those who know my father Emmet Root, give him a shout out this Thanksgiving as it's his birthday (or leave him a comment below, but no old jokes because he's heard them all before).
Emmet's a true inspiration to all he meets. At the great age of 79, he's going stronger than ever, selling up a storm and enjoying every minute. Our profession allows us to work as long as we want. My dad is a testament that keeping an active mind, healthy body and positive can do attitude will allow you to live a full life - long after your peers are sitting at home bored to tears watching Matlock reruns.
Happy Birthday Dad. You can have your birthday off but I expect you to get right back out there on Friday and sell something.
To all my readers Enjoy your Thanksgiving and we'll talk after the holiday.
