Your Path

July 9, 2009

Having to spend the last week answering 3 pages of prepared questions for a future story about our companies got us to thinking… everyone should spend a bit of time really thinking about our personal and business objectives. I have to compliment this reporter as she asked intelligent and articulate questions that really made me stop and think. This process was very insightful for myself and the people I surround myself with. It forced me to further think of the path we are on and the road map of how we see how we will get to our goals…the future road map.

During difficult times it is so easy to get consumed in the moment and forget to keep any eye on the future. The future will come and often we haven’t created any mid and long term goals.

Our road maps affect ourselves, our businesses, our families and our communities. Think of all the people you touch in your business by the decisions you make.

At first this seemed like a very grueling task, but as we dug deep, it was very insightful for myself and our small team. We needed to ask more questions of ourselves.

It might seem impossible to speculate what the future will be, but by thinking about goals as it relates to our own personal wishes, it is probably the best way to go about this. I know for myself that it all boils down to what will make me feel comfortable and happy.

As business owners, our goals reflect our wish to create flexible lives that aren’t reliant on a 9 to 5 job. The problem is, most owners work more than 40 hours per week and effort is definitely tied to the results. The biggest question that comes to mind is, are the results worth the effort? And if not, what is stopping you from making changes?

Since our goal is to survive and flourish in the decades to come in the furniture industry, we found these questions to be thoughtful and realistic for ourselves. These helped us to create long and short term goals. Hopefully these questions will do the same for you.

Answer them with your business partner and family members. You never know, but as with our experience, some of our answers were even a surprise to us. Enjoy the Video:

Have I been here before?

Am I holding onto something I need to let go of?

What is my ideal outcome and is it realistic?

What is stopping me from making real changes(in my personal and business life?)

How many ways can I create to reach my outcome?

Who is in control? (Does environment control you or you control your environment?)

What am I prepared to leave behind?

Am I reacting rather than responding?
