Rankings, reports and more, oh my!

Furniture/Today’s research and editorial teams have recently finished compiling several key industry rankings and reports. These include the annual Top 100 U.S. Furniture Stores report, the Top Sources for the U.S. Market and the annual Imports/Exports report.
Here are some take-away stats from each. Keep in mind all data is for calendar years 2008 and 2007.
On the retail side:
Sales of furniture, bedding and decorative accessories for Furniture/Today’s Top 100 U.S. Furniture Stores totaled $27.8 billion in 2008, down 8.1% from 2007.
The Top 100 U.S. Furniture Stores sold through 8,899 stores in 2008, an increase of 1.3% from 8,781 stores in 2007.
U.S. consumer spending on furniture and bedding totaled $77.1 billion in 2008, down 9.3% from 2007, according to the U.S. Dept. of Commerce and Furniture/Today market research
On the wholesale side:
Estimated U.S. Furniture shipments for Furniture/Today’s Top 25 Furniture Sources for the U.S. market totaled $11.9 billion in 2008, down 10.4% from 2007.
U.S. wood furniture and upholstery shipments, including imports, totaled $35.3 billion in 2008, down 12.0% from 2007, according to Mann, Armistead & Epperson
Furniture imports shipped to the U.S. totaled $22.6 billion in 2008, down 6.0% from 2007, according to the U.S. Customs Service, U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. International Trade Commission.
U.S. Furniture exports totaled $2.8 billion in 2008, an increase of 15.0% from 2007, according to the U.S. Customs Service, U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. International Trade Commission.
