Retail sales of furniture and bedding, estimated at $71.9 billion in 2009, is predicted to increase 14.0% by 2014 and reach $82 billion, according to statisticians at Easy Analytic Software, Inc., based in New York.This five-year projected growth is welcomed good news on the heels of 2009, where total consumer spending for furniture and bedding decreased 8.8% from 2008. (The 2009 and 2008 figures are Furniture/Today market research estimates based on figures from the U.S. Department of Commerce and adjusted to exclude contract furniture and certain other non-residential furniture product categories.)
The fastest-growing areas The Western and Southern regions of the U.S. will be the fastest-growing regions in terms of furniture and bedding sales over the next five years, based on predicted changes in population. The West is expected to grow its sales by 16.5%, while the South will grow by an estimated 16.3%.Twenty states, 12 in the West and eight in the South, are expected to grow faster than the national rate of 14.0%.
