Hello. I'm Jerry Cohen and with this blog I'll be providing insight and solutions regarding legal matters affecting the furniture industry, including operational issues, trends, and current and proposed legislation. I've worked on the business and legal side of the furniture industry which gives me an unusual perspective on the complexities we face.

My firm and I currently counsel furniture manufacturers and national, regional and local retailers with their corporate, commercial and intellectual property transactions, as well as day to day matters. In the course of our work we deal on a regular basis with federal, state and local authorities, attorneys general, financial institutions (such as banks, asset based lenders, hedge funds and private equity); licensors and licensees; the media; sale promoters; creditors and debtors, landlords, and others. Licensing at WithIt

I had the pleasure of attending the WithIt conference the other week ( ” Women in the Home Industries Today”) and speaking about “The Win-Win Licensing Agreement: Drafting and Negotiating Strategies” (the conference was sponsored by Furniture/Today among many others). Let’s discuss how manufacturers and designers can arm themselves against the copycats, and how retailers can stay out of trouble. Three popular tools that manufacturers and designers have at their disposal to protect their product designs against pirating are design patents, copyrights... More

What Ashley Teaches Us About Licensing and Partnering (Part 2)

Licensing continues to be a significant strategy for both furniture manufacturers and retailers. Furniture Today reported earlier this month that more than a dozen licensed groups were showcased at market.  In a previous post we reviewed general licensing principles using the first half of the Ashley licensing agreement between Ashley and Jennifer Convertibles as a model ( for further...
