Top 15 pacesetters in market share race
Ashley continues to set a torrid growth pace in the mattress industry, recording a 19% sales gain last year to crack the Top 10 with bedding revenues of $119 million. No other Top 15 bedding producer could match that growth rate.
E.S. Kluft, the high-end California-based producer, had the second-best growth year in 2016, posting an 11.3% sales gain and pushing its bedding revenues to $89 million. Those were the only two producers with double-digit sales gains last year.
Those are some of the highlights of Furniture Today’s Top 15 U.S. bedding producers report, published last week. That closely watched report presents the performance scorecard for the industry’s leading producers and is one of our flagship bedding reports.
You will note that I haven’t mentioned any of the Big Four brands yet. That’s because those brands had a mixed performance last year.
The bad news for Serta was that it experienced a 5.1% sales decline after it had problems shipping a new line last year. The good news was that it maintained its hold at the top of the bedding pyramid, with a $132 million edge over No. 2 Sealy, which was up 3% last year.
The Sealy figure includes Stearns & Foster, which saw its revenues grow 3.3%, to $310 million, according to our report.
Ashley’s strong performance vaulted that company inside the Top 10 – into the No. 8 spot that had been held by King Koil. King Koil, with a slight sales decline last year, takes the No. 11 position that had been held by Ashley.
Fast-growing Sherwood moves onto the Top 15 list this year, with estimated bedding revenues of $92 million. Sherwood recently announced that South African retail powerhouse Steinhoff is acquiring a majority stake in the company, a move expected to boost Sherwood’s business with Mattress Firm, already owned by Steinhoff.
Symbol, which had a better-than-average year with its 7.4% sales gain, again holds the No. 12 spot on the list, while Kingsdown, with a 4.3% sales gain last year, maintains its No. 13 ranking. Sherwood takes the No. 14 post, while E.S. Kluft, despite its strong growth last year, slips from No. 14 to No. 15.
Given the dynamic nature of the bedding marketplace, no companies can rest on their laurels. Last year’s winners have their work cut out for them to stay in front of the pack, while their competitors are already working hard to turn the tables this year. And so the battle for market share marches on.
