Mattress Discounters, based in Virginia Beach, Va., has heard from a number of satisfied customers over the years. But until recently the bedding chain never had gotten a poem from a happy customer. Chromcraft profits surge 51.1%
Delphi, Ind.— Manufacturer-importer Chromcraft Revington's first-quarter profits surged 51.1% despite a sales decline of 3.9%. Sales in the quarter ended April 2 slipped from $46.5 million a year ago to $44.7 million. Net income jumped to $2.3 million from $1.5 million in the comparable 2004 quarter.

Stanley sales up 16% in 1Q
Stanleytown, Va.— Case goods manufacturer and importer Stanley Furniture Co. reported first-quarter sales of $83 million and net income of $5.8 million, increases of 16% and 25%, respectively, over the prior year's period. It was the 12th consecutive quarter of sales growth and the sixth straight quarter of double-digit sales gains.

Sears Canada sales slip, profits dip 16.3%
Toronto— Home furnishings and other non-weather-dependent categories were rare first-quarter bright spots for Sears Canada, which said sales in the 13-week period ended April 2 slipped 0.8% to C$1.32 billion from C$1.33 billion in last year's first quarter. Same-store sales for this country's second-largest furniture and bedding merchant fell 2.

L&P sales up 9.6%, profits rise 15.9%
Carthage, Mo.— Components kingpin and metal bed maker Leggett & Platt said first-quarter net income rose 15.9% on a sales increase of 9.6%. The nation's largest supplier of furniture and bedding components said overall unit volume essentially was even with the 2004 first quarter, so the bulk of the sales gain resulted from inflation.

Flexsteel sales, earnings fall
Dubuque, Iowa— Upholstery and case goods producer Flexsteel Inds. said sales in its third quarter ended March 31 declined 5.3% from a year ago to $101.3 million. Net earnings fell 33.1% to $1.7 million, despite one-time gains of about $200,000 from the sale of a former plant and $700,000 from a beneficial tax ruling.

Select Comfort 1Q sales up 23.5%
Minneapolis— Airbed manufacturer-retailer Select Comfort reported a 23.5% first-quarter sales gain, paired with a net income jump of 17.9%. In the quarter ended April 2, Select Comfort sales were $172.8 million, compared with $140 million in the first quarter of 2004. Profits were $8.6 million, up from $7.

FBI sales down 5.3% in 1Q
St. Louis— Furniture Brands International's first-quarter sales declined 5.3% from the same period a year ago, largely because of weakness in the midpriced part of its lineup, the No. 1 U.S. manufacturer said. Earnings fell 25.4% as higher raw materials costs and a competitive pricing environment squeezed profit margins, Chairman and CEO Mickey Holliman said in a conference call.

Shipping rates climbing
High Point— The cost of importing goods from Asia is increasing thanks to a hike in shipping rates. The increase, effective May 1, raises prices by $285 per 40-foot container for shipments from Asia to the West Coast. On 40-foot containers sent to the East Coast through the Panama or Suez canals, the increase is $430.

Duralee acquires N.C. facility
Morganton, N.C.— Duralee Fabrics has purchased a 180,000-square-foot facility on 32 acres here to accommodate the growth of its Duralee and Highland Court fabric lines and its Duralee Fine Furniture collection. Duralee will begin making the line of upholstery, case goods and accent furniture at the Morganton facility this month and eventually will move all furniture production there.

Zocalo debuts gallery program
San Francisco— Zocalo, an importer of exclusively designed case goods, occasional and leather upholstery, has introduced a retail gallery program called Inspired Living by Zocalo. At the April market in High Point, Zocalo lined up enough commitments to open a gallery a month through the end of the year.

Arnheim, the Netherlands— Finish supplier Akzo Nobel is expanding its Decorative Coatings division by buying a Swiss architectural paint company. Alan White to consolidate, close factory in Arkansas
Stamps, Ark.— Upholstery manufacturer Alan White Furniture will close its 225,000-square-foot plant here, with manufacturing operations ceasing at the end of June. BDO: February orders off 1%
High Point— U.S. furniture factory orders in February were 1% below the year-earlier level for the second month in a row, but it's nothing to panic over, according to BDO Seidman. Last year started strong, with orders up 13% from the previous year, and the industry is doing OK to come close to that, the accounting and consulting firm said in its monthly Furniture Insights newsletter.

Robert Emmett Tierney, veteran rep, importer
Los Altos, Calif.— Longtime sales representative and importer Robert Emmett Tierney has died after a six-month battle with prostate cancer. He was 84. Tierney served as a bombardier and navigator on a fighter plane during World War II, flying 53 night missions over Germany, downing numerous enemy aircraft and bombing three trains.
