O'Sullivan utilizes financial grace period
Roswell, Ga.— Ready-to-assemble furniture maker O'Sullivan Inds. said it is taking a time out on a $5.3 million interest payment that was due July 15. The flat-pack producer is utilizing a 30-day grace period related to its $100 million, 10.63% senior secured notes. Using the grace period does not constitute default under the financial agreement.

Dorel projects flat '05 net earnings
Montreal— Consumer products powerhouse Dorel said problems in its home furnishings and recreational/leisure products segments will affect net earnings in the second half of the year. The parent of ready-to-assemble furniture producer Ameriwood said it expects higher pretax profits over 2004, but after-tax profits for the year will be in the same range as last year.

Foamex lowers 2Q earnings expectations
Linwood, Pa.— Foam supplier Foamex said it has significantly reduced its earnings expectations for the second quarter, pointing to escalating raw materials costs and a difficult operating environment as contributors to weaker-than-expected performance. Stanley sales, earnings up
Stanleytown, Va.— Case goods manufacturer and importer Stanley Furniture posted double-digit increases in sales and earnings in its quarter and six months ended July 2. Second-quarter sales jumped 15.8% to $83.6 million from $72.2 million in the same quarter in 2004. Net income in the latest quarter grew 11.

Harley-Davidson rocks, thanks to Troutman
Troutman, N.C.— These chairs move, but not as fast as their namesake. Manufacturer Troutman Chair is introducing a line of rockers emblazoned with the famous logo of a new customer, Harley-Davidson. Under a contract with the motorcycle manufacturer, the company designed the chairs to Harley-Davidson specifications and made them using Troutman's traditional Shaker construction techniques.

Legends moves into high-tech plant
Las Vegas— Legends Furniture, a manufacturer and importer of home office, home entertainment and bedroom furniture, has completed its move to a new 150,000-square-foot, high-tech plant in the Phoenix area. The 28-acre site also includes a distribution center that, through three-high pallet racking, has 150,000 square feet of effective warehouse space.

Russell Allen 'Rusty' Hancock, BenchCraft sales representative
Montgomery, Ala.— Russell Allen "Rusty" Hancock, a longtime sales representative for BenchCraft and other companies, has died. He was 54. Hancock began his career in 1974 with his late father, Jerry A. Hancock, representing Stoneville Dinettes in Georgia. He moved to Alabama in 1980 with Stoneville, then in 1985 joined Douglas Furniture.

It's finally showtime in Las Vegas: Florida's City sending 200
Las Vegas— To celebrate its success and reward its employees, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based City Furniture is sending 200 people to the inaugural furniture market here. It's the biggest crew City ever has sent to a market. Some 100 employees with their spouses or guests will hit the city in two shifts starting July 25.

More shuttles free in H.P.
High Point— Market shuttle buses to High Point from airports in Raleigh/Durham, N.C., and Charlotte, N.C., will be free starting in October, according to the International Home Furnishings Market Authority. Fashion Bed Group launches brand in Europe
Chicago— As part of a growing global business strategy, metal beds importer Fashion Bed Group is launching its brand name in Europe. The company is using space in two warehouse operations owned by Leggett & Platt to distribute to retailers in France and England. One is in Newark, in central England, and another is in Aubigne-Racan, a town south of Paris.

Cory adds clients, links with MGM
Jersey City, N.J.— Cory Home Delivery said it has picked up several new clients and also formalized a relationship with MGM Transport to perform home deliveries from MGM facilities. Patrick Cory, vice president of strategic development, said the company has worked for years with MGM, whose main business is delivering to stores and warehouses, not homes.

Chilliwack, British Columbia— ProShield Canada has signed a service agreement to market Stainsafe fabric protection products and services to Canadian retailers, and manage the Canadian business. Broyhill is showing first China leather in Las Vegas
Las Vegas— Broyhill is showing its first leather upholstery imported from China with the introduction of two groups here. Much of Broyhill's leather upholstery offerings of late were crafted from cut-and-sew kits from South America. "We're bringing out finished products from China for the first time," said Michael Delgatti, executive vice president, upholstery and occasional merchandising.

Canadian retailers scouting Vegas action
Las Vegas— The inaugural market here is drawing Canadian furniture retailers of all sizes and stripes, but exhibitors won't see a huge turnout from north of the border the first time out. Most chains and buying groups have sent one or two members of their buying and merchandising teams with a mandate to scout the market and report back.

High Point— Case goods and upholstery maker Drexel Heritage will post suggested retail prices on its Web site beginning Aug. 1. The Furniture Brands International division will not sell to consumers on the site, nor will it require independent retailers or dedicated Drexel Heritage stores to sell product at the suggested prices.

Scoperta show moving to Milan
Hemel Hempstead, United Kingdom— The annual Scoperta fabric show, held in Chiasso, Switzerland, each May is moving to the new Fiera Milano venue in Milan, Italy, for its next edition, May 9–12, 2006. Fiera Milano is about 30 minutes from Cernobbio, Italy, site of the annual Proposte fabric fair, also held in May, and about 30 minutes from the Malpensa and Linate airports.

Arthritis Foundation lauds Tempur-Pedic
Lexington, Ky.— Bedding maker Tempur-Pedic has received Ease-of-Use Commendations from the Arthritis Foundation for three of its visco-elastic mattresses and its adjustable base. Mebane, N.C.— Kingsdown has presented a check for $500,000 to the Duke Children's Hospital in nearby Durham, N.C. High Point— In the fourth quarter of 2004, 11.7 million shoppers researched furniture online before making a purchase at a local store, according to Milwaukee-Wis.-based Dieringer Research Group. Overall, Dieringer estimates 76.4 million U.S. consumers made offline purchases impacted by online information during 2004, up 27% from the prior year.

Montana Furniture launches sixth unit
Bozeman, Mont.— Montana Furniture Galleries has opened its third new store this year, bringing its total to six. The new stores are in Kalispell and Missoula, Mont., and in Cheyenne, Wyo. The Kalispell unit is 7,800 square feet, the Missoula unit is 14,000 square feet and the Cheyenne location is 18,000 square feet.

Bedmart sets 23rd store
Mesa, Ariz.— Arizona mattress retailer Bedmart is in the process of opening its 23rd store here on the southeast corner of Power and McKellips. The showroom is set to open in late summer or early fall. The 6,250-square-foot store will display some 80 mattresses. Bedmart has stores in metro Phoenix, Tucson, Casa Grande, Sierra Vista and Green Valley.
