HIGH POINT — Kevin Toman, one of bedding’s senior statesmen, has been named the winner of Furniture Today’s Lifetime Bedding Achievement Award.
Toman, who recently wrapped up a 46-year mattress career when he retired as CEO of Top 10 producer Englander, will be honored at the Furniture Today Bedding Conference, set for May 7-9 at the Westin La Paloma Resort in Tucson, Ariz.
“Kevin is a remarkable person,” said Mark Kinsley, who succeeded Toman as president of Englander. “He brings out the best in those around him by encouraging independent thinking and empowering people to use their talents.”
Toman is the fifth person to win the Lifetime Bedding Achievement Award. He joins Gary Fazio, Ed Lilly, Harry Cornell and Earl Kluft in that select group.
He joined Englander as president in 2005. It was his fifth major assignment in the industry, which saw him work earlier in his career at Simmons, Serta and Sealy, then bedding’s three largest producers. He also served as CEO at Restonic.
Throughout his career he has had a sure sense of the steps he needed to take to grow his business. He was a natural teacher, building strong teams of leaders wherever he went, forging close relationships with his customers, and looking for growth opportunities through new channels of distribution and new marketing programs.
The world was his sales territory. He gave Englander a global reach, with licensees in more than two dozen countries.
“I’m proud of the people I’ve been able to help over the course of my career and the great groups of bedding professionals I’ve been privileged to lead,” Toman said. “I’ve seen many changes over the years, but the strong sense of community in the mattress industry and its commitment to helping consumers get a better night of sleep have remained constant over the years. And those qualities made my bedding journey so rewarding.”
Toman will be honored at the awards dinner at the Furniture Today Bedding Conference, set for May 8.
