COMO, Italy — Ready-to-assemble furniture manufacturer Wedgewood Furniture was awarded the A’ Design Award in the Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design Category for its Beat line of bamboo plywood indoor and outdoor furniture.
The Beat line — designed and developed by Diego Arevalo, Gifford Cochran and Erick Balderas — includes chairs, tables, sofa/bench, rocking chair and stool. The flat-pack furniture has a patented assembly system that requires no tools or hardware and is held together by interlocking hooks, grooves and wedges.
“The decorative elements of the Beat Line were inspired by the cascading lights on a musical mixing board,” said Arevalo, who was project leader of Beat. “We wanted to create a line of furniture that could be mass produced from sustainable materials and finished with minimal handwork. It had to pack flat and be able to be put together and taken apart without damage to the parts. It also had to be durable, simple, comfortable, suitable for indoor or outdoor use and be visually appealing.”
A’ International Design Award and Competition recognizes the top 20% of designs that exemplify a high level of quality in design. Entries are peer-reviewed and anonymously judged by an expert panel of leading academics, influential press members and experienced professions.
A’ Design Award winners are listed at World Design Rankings, highlighted at Design Classification platform and showcased at DesignMag.org, which lists the best designs from all countries in all disciplines.
