Bed Bath & Beyond closing 43 locations by end of February

Part of previously announced plan to “right-size” retail chain

UNION, N.J. – Bed Bath & Beyond is planning to close 43 stores by the end of February 2021 as a part of its restructuring process.

According to USA Today, the locations are now going through store-closing liquidation sales. The retailer announced last summer that it would close 21% or 200 of its stores over the next two years in order to “right-size” the company.

The closing includes stores in 19 states (Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah and Virginia) and Puerto Rico.

California will lose nine locations; Florida, Ohio, Virginia will each close four store locations; while New York and Colorado will close three Bed Bath & Beyond locations this time around.

Company spokesperson Dominic Pendry told USA Today that by the end of February, the company expects to have completed around 60% of the closures, which includes about 120 stores.

Last summer, the retailer said these actions would generate annual cost savings of between $250 million and $350 million, excluding related one-time expenses. Bed Bath & Beyond operated a total of 1,476 stores as of August 2020.
