Western N.Y. retailer closing after 121 years

BATAVIA, N.Y. — Max Pies Furniture here is closing after more than a century in business.

First reported by local newspaper The Batavian, the , N.Y.-based retailer’s third-generation owner, is retiring while fourth-generation owner is leaving to take on new challenges.

Phil Pies, 83, spent 55 years in the business while Steve, 56, has helped run it for the past 23. Steve Pies told The Batavian that his father’s retirement made it the right time to end the store’s run. He said tariffs and inflation have impacted the business, but they were not the deciding factors.

A store closing sale, handled by an outside firm, is expected to last about 12 weeks and all inventory will be sold.
